Sentinel High School Computer Building Club
2018-2019
Alex Spaulding designed the Computer Building Club at Sentinel High School in Missoula, Montana, and proposed it to the principal for approval. He taught the club through his senior year in 2018 while still a student. After graduating in 2018, he went back and led it for another year through 2019.
He put together slide shows on how computers work, then ran hands-on labs where students learned to disassemble and reassemble desktops and laptops, and interactively quizzed them on which component is which. Some students took those lessons home and built their own desktop computers. The club ran successful fundraisers and recruiting booths (including Rocket League) that drew 40+ incoming freshmen. At the end of the year, Alex held a summary presentation in the Sentinel High School Gym for the whole school on what the club had accomplished.
Members also built gaming desktops sold through Missoula Computes, a computer store in Missoula. The club became the most popular at the school in 2018; Computer Building later became a formal class at Sentinel after the club's success.
